Q&A with Jay Allen President & CEO – Wayfinder Family Services – Summer 2025

Wayfinder Family Services President & CEO

Wayfinder’s annual event, “The Conversation,” focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Could you tell us a bit about why this topic was chosen this year?

Our mission is deeply rooted in supporting the well-being of children, youth and families. We recognize that ACEs have a profound and lasting impact on individuals and communities. Understanding and addressing ACEs is crucial to changing the future for those we serve. This year’s panel discussion was a deliberate effort to raise awareness about this critical issue and highlight the important work being done in California.

The panel featured some impressive individuals, including California Surgeon General Dr. Diana E. Ramos. What were some of the key takeaways from the discussion?

It was truly an honor to have such esteemed experts join us. Dr. Ramos provided invaluable insights into California’s historic investment in the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) and the crucial role of the “Live Beyond” campaign in raising ACEs awareness. Her passion for reducing maternal mortality through the “Strong Start & Beyond” initiative also resonated deeply with our commitment to early childhood well-being.

Equally impressive were her fellow panelists and our phenomenal moderator. Josue “Swey” Pineda’s personal journey and his powerful advocacy work through the Beyond ACEs campaign offered a vital perspective on lived experience. Dr. Dawn Vo-Jutabha, Wayfinder’s own chief operating officer, shared Wayfinder’s practical approach to ACEs screenings and the strategies we employ to build resilience within our programs. Emily Williams, CEO of UCAAN, expertly moderated the discussion, highlighting the significant impact of ACEs on Californians and lending her expertise on the topic.

There is hope: building resilience is the key to balancing the negative effects of ACEs. I am incredibly grateful to Wayfinder’s leadership, staff, supporters and partners for helping us build resilience and change the future for so many in our programs.
